Abstract

 

The study investigates the influence of Conflict Resolution Strategies and Motivational Factors on the Job Involvement of Academic Staff in Private Universities in Oyo State. This study adopted a descriptive research design. The population of the study consists of one thousand, two hundred and seventy-three (1273) academic staff of the 7 private universities in Oyo State, Nigeria. All lecturers in the private universities in Oyo state were selected using total enumeration. The data were analyzed using frequency, percentages and inferential statistics of Multiple Regression analysis at a 0.05 level of significance. A self developed instrument- Conflict resolution motivational factor, job involvement questionnaire (CRMFJIQ) (=0.993) was used for data collection. There was a significant combined influence of conflict strategies and motivational factors on job involvement of academics staff in private universities in Oyo State (Adj.R2=0.991, F, = 49730, P < 0.05). The result showed that there was a moderate level (x=2.93) of job involvement of academic staff of private universities in Oyo State ; the most commonly used Conflict Resolution strategy in private universities in Oyo State was Negotiation (x=3.14) the level of Motivational Factor was moderate. Among conflict Resolution Strategies, collaboration has the highest positive impact (B = 1.221, Beta = 0.351), followed by mediation (B = 0.590, Beta = 0.154), and accommodation (B = 0.353, Beta = 0.081), Regarding motivational factors, promotion has the highest positive impact (B = 1.099, Beta = 0.234), followed by job security (B = 0.732, Beta = 0.187), and professional development opportunities (B = 0.108, Beta = 0.023). Academic staff in Oyo State private universities exhibit moderate level job involvement (x=2.93). Despite high promotion rates, areas for improvement include job security and professional development. To enhance negotiation capabilities and foster a positive work environment, private universities in Oyo State should invest in conflict resolution training for Academic Staff. A holistic approach to employee engagement is crucial, encompassing transparent promotion processes, professional development opportunities, and job security measures to boost job involvement.
